Alexander McRae Dechman initially established Grand Prairie under the name “Dechman.” In the 1800s, it was possible to trade wagons and oxen for land in Dallas County. When Dechman learned of this, he traded his oxen team, a broken wagon, combined with $200 Confederate money, and acquired 339 acres of land in 1863. After Dechman spent a few years fighting in the civil war, he returned to Texas and platted 50 acres of land within Dallas County in 1867. Later, to guarantee that the railroad would run through his new town, he agreed to sell half of the 50 acres to T&P Railroad, which named the new depot "Dechman." When the post office built a post office in the area, the United States Postal Service named the post office "Deckman" because they couldn't read the handwriting on the form. Further adding to the confusion, the map that had been drawn up by the railroad in the previous years designated the area as being "Grand Prairie." This eventually led to the town being incorporated under the present name.
Residents who own property in Grand Prairie, Texas, enjoy the charm of a small suburban town with the amenities of a big city. For instance, not far away in Arlington, there is the famed Six Flags Over Texas, a 212-acre amusement park featuring over 50 theme park rides, family-oriented shows, and live music bands. In Grand Prairie, families love to visit Ripley's Believe It or Not Grand Prairie, with its fantastic wax museum, shrunken heads, and various other oddities that can only be found in such a place. Adding to the allure of Grand Prairie are the many parks and natural spaces that surround the area. Located within Dallas County is Cedar Ridge Preserve, which is a 600-acre nature preserve offering nine miles of pristine walking trails, camps sites, and places to relax and take in Nature's beauty. Located 10 miles southwest of Dallas, there is Cedar Hill State Park, featuring secluded wooded camping grounds, fishing holes, hiking and biking trails, bodies of water perfect for swimming and boating, and bird-watching.
